Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
An earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude has hit northeast of Christchurch, New Zealand, the US Geological Survey reports.

The USGS says that the centre of the quake was on land, 57 miles (91km) from the city which was badly damaged by one that measured 6.3 in 2011.

The initial tremor was followed by three aftershocks, further north and also both inland - including a 6.2 magnitude about 20 miles (28km) northwest of Kaikoura and a 5.7 south-southeast of Bleinheim.

My cousin has a house in Hanmer Springs, which seems as close as anywhere to the epicentre. He says the house is intact although it's a mess as the kitchen cupboards emptied onto the floor. In March I'll be there and in Kaikoura, assuming the roads will be clear and repaired by then. Expecting a few aftershocks, hopefully not another big one as in Chch.

Hope this calms down soon and there is no more loss of life.
My sister in law has family in Cantebury and surrounds and luckily all well.

I see Thursday's Test match in Christchurch v Pakistan is still planned to go ahead at the moment.

EAH - I seem to recall reading a few months back that being so remote, NZ had been spared most excesses of drug addiction until lab-made drugs arose, at which point "Kiwi ingenuity" meant NZ had one of the biggest problems.

Anyway, seems there are all manner of after shocks still going on, as would be expected. But still a chance of after shocks virtually as big as the main quakes (two main quakes almost simultaneously some people are saying) plus shitty weather to bring about more landslides.

Got a couple of mates in Canterbury, plus others in Wellington and Huwea, so have been spending as much time today monitoring the quake as doing any work.

I wouldn't worry too much about Buster. He doesn't mean it. It's just him having a dig at/trying to get a rise out of me.

FEH - that rings a bell to me too actually. Can almost guarantee it will be drug-related. Massive problem with P (methamphetamine) here, and people just have no shame any more.

I reckon they should somehow secure the thieves across the faultline and just keep feeding them and making sure they're alive until the next big quake rips them in two, or they drown in the liquefaction. That would be quite a nice deterrent.

Re: Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
I guess it's good that there are *only* 2 dead (though little consolation for their friends and relatives, I appreciate)

Regarding the looting: I remember the stories after the last Chch quake. I was in NSW at the time on business. (What was left of) a family returned from burying a number of their members to discover their house burgled.

Sure are some sick cunts about.

Yeah, that's pretty bad.

I'd like to revise my earlier statement from "Just hope nobody else is dead" to I hope nobody else apart from those thieving toerags is dead.

It's even worse when you realise the daughter has cerebral palsy and they nicked her hearing system as well as the family holiday videos on the GoPro.

There's some sick fuckers in this world, burglars/looters waited until people had evacuated their homes for safety had their homes broken into.

Re: Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
I live in Wellington. It was huge, thought my house was going to collapse. We had to evacuate up the Western Hills because of tsunami warnings. Lost power for 6 hours too. Still getting regular mag 5 quakes rumbling through, house feels like it's made of jelly.

Re: Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
People claiming to have felt it all the way up here in Auckland.

I guess depending on your location relative to the various faultlines, then it's possible.

Scary stuff. Just hope nobody else is dead.

Re: Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
We got woken up in the early hours as the whole house seemed to be rolling from side to side and every other which way too, no damage here but I loathe the fuckers.

Re: Powerful earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
I live just outside Christchurch. It lasted about 2 mins and loads of aftershocks throughout the night.

Considering the size of the magnitude, feels like it could have been a lot worse.

Kaikoura is cut off as there has been a landslide.

Heard someone say that Christchurch has pretty much had everything fall down that can fall down.
